Brown Sets New National 400 Meter Record In Route To Nationals
Bain Ends Colligate Career With NCAA Outdoor and Indoor 400 Meters Titles
It was a fitting moment on Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Iowa as Oral Roberts University senior Andretti Bain added the NCAA men’s 400 meter to his collection.
Bain won the 400 meters in 44.62 seconds ahead of Southern California Lionel Larry who was second in 44.63 seconds while Midwest Conference Champion LeJerald Betters settle in third in 44.83 seconds.
Bain having now recorded the third fastest 400 meter time in Bahamian history behind Chris Brown 44.40 and Avard Moncur 44.45, now looks ahead at the Olympic games and competing on the European circuit.
PICKSTOCK CROWNED NEW NATIONAL JUNIOR 400 METER CHAMPION
La’Sean Pickstock shock the stadium at the BAAA National Junior Championship securing the 400 meter title in 47.32 seconds defeating 2007 silver medalist Juan Lewis 47.35 seconds.
Defending champion Demetrius Pinder suffered an injury earlier in the season and was unable to compete.
Pickstock fresh of the NAIA National Championships having ran a personnel best time of 47.19 seconds caught Lewis at the line edging him out for the win.
The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations Scotia Bank Olympic Trials is all set and ready to begin today at the Thomas A. Robinson stadium beginning at 6:30pm with an opening ceremony.
Competition is expected to kick off at 7:30pm with the men's high jump finals. World Champion Donald Thomas will go head to head once again with former National Champion Trevor Barry.
Thomas has a seasons best of 2.25 meters while Barry has recorded a 2.23-meter seasons best. Also expected to be in the high jump finals are Carifta Record holder intermediate boys and gold medallist Raymond Higgs and former Carifta gold medallist and record holder senior boys Jamal Wilson.
The field events will remain spicy tonight as defending National Champion in the men's long jump Osbourne Moxey will be challenged by 2006 World Junior finalist Rudon Bastian.
On the track, the men and women 100-meter finals will take place, as National Champions Derrick Atkins and Chandra Sturrup will look to hold off the many challengers for the title.
The preliminaries of the men and women 400 meters will also be on the track tonight as National Champions Chris Brown and Shakeitha Henfield are looking to easily advance into Saturday's finals then battle for the National crown.
Also taking place tonight is the men 400-meter hurdles. 2006 Carifta silver medallist Carlyle Thompson will meet his teammate, Carifta record holder in the under 17 boys hurdles, Nejmi Burnside for the first time in the same race.
Day two is scheduled to be just as exciting as Carifta 200 meter gold medallist Nivea Smith and Sheniqua Ferguson is expected to go head to head once again in the 200 meters for the third time with a record 1-1.
Defending National Champion Debbie Ferguson - McKenzie is expected to advance into the 200-meter finals along with Cache Armbrister to add some flavour to Ferguson and Smith competitive war.

Before a packed stadium of 16,000 people in Oslo Norway during the Bislett Games, Bahamian National 400 meter champion Chris Brown set a new National Record of 44.40 seconds placing second behind the reigning World and Olympic champion American Jeremy Wariner. Brown equaled the old mark of 44.45 seconds at last year's World Championships, which was set by former World Champion Avard Moncur in Madrid Spain in 2001. Brown controlled 350 meters of the race but faded the last 50 meters and was passed by Warner. |
