Following the Junior National Track and Field Championships at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium, The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations officially named a talented 12-member team for the 7th IAAF World Youth Championships in Suditrol, Italy, from July 8th-12th.
The team that will try to improve on the country’s 2007 performance when Nivea Smith made history when she won a bronze medal in the 200m at the World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Smith is the first Bahamian to win a medal at a World Youth Championships.
This years’ team will be led by sprinter V’Alonee Robinson in the 100 meters. She qualified with a time of 12.01.
Also on the team are Katrina Seymour and Rashan Brown who will run the 400m. Brown has a season’s best of 53.93 that she clocked at the Carifta Championships in St. Lucia. Seymour has a best of 54.94 achieved at the Bahamas Nationals.
Hughnique Rolle who set a new Bahamian Junior National Record in the 1500m (4:44.61) at the Carifta Championships will run the 800m at the Worlds. Her fastest time in the half mile is 2:15.63 also achieved at Carifta.
Quarter-miler Katarina Smith (55.39) and 100m sprinter Sparkyle Cash (12.27) have also been named to the female section of the team for relay duties.
The men’s team included Jonathan Farqhuarson (10.59) and Geno Jones (10.67) in the 100m. Farqhuarson ran his seed time at the Carifta Championships while Jones came into form later in the season, and established his spot on the team at the Nationals.
Patrick Bodie will contest the 110-hurdles with an entry time of 14.24 which he ran at the Fritz Grant Invitational.
Demetrie Knowles (21.55) and Harold Carter (21.82) will compete in the half lap, while quarter-miler Glenwood Balliou (49.10) will travel for relay duties.
The Bahamas Federation selection committee also made special consideration for 110-hurdler Aaron Wilmore (13.74) and 400-hurdler Nejmi Burnside (52.97) to show fitness before the team departs The Bahamas.
Wilmore’s performance at the Fritz Grant Invitational in May ranked at number three on the IAAF Top Performance list 2009 while Burnside was one full second slower than the qualifying standard. .
Wayne Smith will be the Head Coach assisted by Coach Greg Cash. BAAA executives Kermit Taylor and Debbie Smith will travel as team managers.
The Bahamas federation also named a second Junior National Team that will compete at the Pan American Junior Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from July 31st to August 2nd.
The team will consist of Krystal Bodie (100m hurdles), Keithra Richards (triple jump), Katrina Seymour, Rashan Brown, Katarina Smith and Deandra Knowles for relay duty on the women side.
On the men side, Karlton Rolle will head the field in the 200 meters with Nathan Arnett in the 400m Hurdles, J’Vente Deveaux (triple jump), Raymond Higgs (high jump), Warren Fraser, Jonathan Farqhuarson, Geno Jones and Demetrie Knowles for relay duty.
Dianne Woodside will serve as Head Coach with Everette Fraser as her assistant.
